The question is no longer if organizations will adopt it, but whether the foundation beneath it can be trusted.
The study, based on a survey of 124 CISOs and twenty in-depth interviews from this group, highlights several consistent patterns. Organizations have policies for AI, but struggle to enforce them at machine speed. Data estates remain unclassified and ungoverned. Security frameworks were built for human behavior, not autonomous systems. The result is measurable failure, not theoretical risk.
This research points to a clear imbalance. While 90% of enterprises have deployed AI, 70% struggle to enforce security policies around it, and 1 in 5 initiatives fail due to weak data foundations. Adoption is accelerating, but trust in the data that powers it is not keeping pace.
What matters now is the gap. AI is being embedded into core operations, driven by business urgency and expanding faster than governance models were designed to handle. The result is a structural disconnect between speed and security. Nearly two thirds of CISOs lack confidence that their controls can prevent unsafe or inappropriate AI data access. These are not early adopters experimenting at the edge. These are organizations already operating AI at scale, without the assurance that their data is truly protected.
Organizations cannot enforce policies, on data they haven't classified, being accessed by AI systems and tools their frameworks were never built to govern. As a result most are already experiencing AI initiative failure or slowdown and CISOs are struggling to communicate the exposure risk to a business committed to moving fast.
The reality is that AI is a stress-test of existing security fundamentals. Some may suffer catastrophic data loss events, while those who have good security habits will thrive in the AI era.
